Pacino plays ultra-wealthy New Yorker Meyer Offerman, an uncompromising survivor of Nazi atrocities who asks a young recruit, "You know what the best revenge is? Revenge." Along the way, elements of your basic Quentin Tarantino film tend to intrude upon Hunters and take away some of the tautness established in a jarring opening sequence in which a Maryland-dwelling, concentration camp butcher takes extreme action after a young guest recognizes him. Given scant help from either the government or mostly dismissive law enforcement agencies, Pacino and his team are largely going it alone in their quest to kill before being killed. Hunters, which was created by newcomer David Weil, envisions an earlier world in which vicious, Germany-bred Nazis are not only plentiful but intent on launching a Fourth Reich in the United States. The principal behind-the-camera maestro is executive producer Jordan Peele, whose feature film directorial debut with 2017's Get Out made him an instant, award-winning auteur. Still, there's not yet enough goofiness to waylay the genuine chills and thrills running through the first five episodes made available for review. The deadly business at hand – liquidating "goddamn, gold ribbon, Grade A Nazis" as Pacino's character puts it in the 90-minute first chapter – tends to be compromised at times by out-of-body side trips, including song-and-dance production numbers. 21 with Season One's ten episodes, Hunters is a barrelful of misdirection and vitality, disappointment, and exhilaration. Starring Al Pacino (top) and debuting on Friday, Feb.

But the big money walkup to this wildly imaginative series about Nazi track-downs, circa 1977, is clear evidence that Amazon thinks it has a hot one. That said, Amazon Prime couldn't break its bank no matter how hard it tried. Such great materials and many very good attempts to use them, but not quite as well thematically polished as I wish it would be.Promos for Hunters seem to be nearly as plentiful as ads for the lately besieged presidential campaign of Michael "Mike" Bloomberg. Highly original, sometimes wonderfully dynamic but too much flatlining to be great. Questionable morals, inconsistent tone, too much cliche. It also felt like he didn't have a proper rival. The assassin for the Nazis named Travis was an interesting character. I wish there was a stronger antagonist for him to play against.

He brought a believability to his character and stabilized most of the others. Throughout all this though, Al Pacino was stellar. Lots of plots folded like houses of cards. People stay alive who probably shouldn't. Twists happen just when they need to in the season. Jonah solves puzzles without any effort st exactly the right moment. Actually much of the series was resolved too easily. Because of this many character dynamics lost dramatic tension and resolved themselves too easily. Unfortunately "Hunters" did feel like a transplant of 2020 values and liberal attitudes onto 1970s dressed characters. There wasn't much attempt at nuance for the German side and it shouldn't have been ok for the deaths to happen as they did, either for the characters or for us as viewers. By some time it felt like I couldn't get behind the main characters or their mission anymore. I questioned their humor as well as their content and their delivery. While me enjoyment of these elements together persisted throughout several episodes, the grating personalities of several of the actors (why does Jonah curse so much? What's the deal with Joe? What does Roxy even do?) really started to wear me out, and much of the commercial-like inserts didn't do much for me at all. I got "Inglorious Bastards" vibes several times. I thought the mix was something never seen before, although the flavor of it was much like Tarantino films. I appreciated the mix of chilling, somber sobriety about the terrible deeds of the Holocaust (though the director went to some effort to create fictional Holocaust events in lieu of real historical ones) and the kind of funky elements of the over the top 70s America. The first couple episodes of Amazon Prime Original series "Hunters" really wowed me.
